SPECIAL EDITION OF GIBRAN'S CLASSIC WORK "THE PROPHET"

prophetspecialwww.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/59590/the-prophet-by-kahlil-gibran/

BIOGRAPHICAL PUBLICATIONS

bioTimed to coincide with the theatrical release of Salma Hayek's animated feature film, this definitive biography of Kahlil Gibran—author of The Prophet—traces the phenomenon of a first-generation immigrant succeeding in twentieth-century American arts and letters.

Drawing upon never-before published letters and documents, the authors describe Gibran's boyhood in Lebanon, his family's impoverished years in turn-of-the-century Boston, and his eventual friendship with that city's intellectual elite. This authorized and up-to-date biography will make obsolete all previous accounts and will become the definitive study of this extraordinary and well-loved writer.

Jean and Kahlil Gibran are unusually qualified to present this story. The younger Kahlil Gibran, a noted Boston sculptor, is the poet's cousin and namesake. Over a forty-year period, he was entrusted with a formidable body of work left by the poet. Jean Gibran is the author of Love Made Visible: Scenes from a Mostly Happy Marriage. She has worked closely with her husband in researching and writing this biography.

lovevisibleIn Love Made Visible In Love Made Visible, Jean Gibran portrays her role as spouse of a gifted artist and their often stormy family life together in Boston's diverse South End. In the process, she vividly recalls to life the prolific Boston Expressionist art scene to which the South End was home. Retracing the course of her fifty-year marriage to sculptor Kahlil Gibran, cousin of the noted poet Gibran Kahlil Gibran, she reflects on the trials and joys of defying conventions of the 1950s, embracing another culture, raising a child in the household of a driven artist, and enabling her husband's passion for sculpture and craft.

An animated narrative becomes a frame story in which marvelous and dreamlike animations are embedded. As Mustafa discourses on love, marriage, work, and other major life issues, the child Almitra's imagination soars and the viewer is engaged in fantastical and magical interludes that interpret the philosophical messages. Artists from France, Dubai, Poland, Ireland, and the United States directed the animation, each with free rein to interpret and illustrate a poem. The animations, all very different from each other, nevertheless blend seamlessly into the main story. A poem by Kahlil Gibran called "On Teaching," exhorts teachers to practice humility and challenge us: How do we lead our students to the thresholds of their own minds? This Curriculum Guide will help you achieve that goal by introducing lessons that encourage both critical thinking and creativity.

The film Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet and the accompanying Curriculum Guide may be used independently or in conjunction with the study of the book "The Prophet" in world literature, American literature, poetry, creative writing, and even Advanced Placement literature classes. It is important that students understand the textual differences between the original book and the film.

The Prophet in one sitting. If you are teaching the entire unit, you should decide whether to show it once or several times. The film clips of the embedded animations used in the lessons are indicated by starting and stopping numbers. Please note that these are approximate, depending on your specific version of the film. Some clips include a bit of the main story because the poem recitation begins before the animation or continues after it. Take the time to set up your projection method before the class begins and bookmark the clip you wish to use so that you can integrate the film clip smoothly into your instruction. New and used printed copies of The Prophet are readily available in bookstores and libraries, and over the Internet. A new paperback edition is due for release in conjunction with the release of the film.
